মোনায়েম সরকার ১৯৪৫ সালের ৩০ মার্চ কুমিল্লা জেলার দেবিদ্বার থানার ফতেহাবাদ গ্রামে এক সম্ভ্রান্ত পরিবারে জন্মগ্রহণ করেন। রাজনীতিক, কলাম লেখক ও গবেষক মোনায়েম সরকার শতাধিক গ্রন্থের প্রণেতা ও সম্পাদক। শুধু গ্রন্থ প্রণয়ন ও সম্পাদনাই নয়-বাংলাদেশের মুক্তিযুদ্ধভিত্তিক ছয়টি থিমেটিক ম্যাপ ও বাইশ পর্বে মুক্তিযুদ্ধভিত্তিক প্রামাণ্যচিত্র নির্মাণ করেন। তিনি গবেষণা প্রতিষ্ঠান বাংলাদেশ ফাউন্ডেশন ফর ডেভেলপমেন্ট রিসার্চের (বিএফডিআর) মহাপরিচালক। বাংলা একাডেমি কর্তৃক দুই খণ্ডে প্রকাশিত বঙ্গবন্ধুর জীবনীগ্রন্থ সম্পাদনা করে অনন্য ভূমিকা রেখেছেন। মুক্তিযুদ্ধসহ এদেশের বিভিন্ন গণতান্ত্রিক ও প্রগতিশীল আন্দোলনে তাঁর রয়েছে উল্লেখযোগ্য ভূমিকা। বঙ্গবন্ধু হত্যাকাণ্ডের পর মুক্তিযুদ্ধের স্বপক্ষ শক্তিকে পুনর্গঠন করার ক্ষেত্রে দেশে-বিদেশে অবস্থান করে বলিষ্ঠ ভূমিকা পালন করেন। রাজনৈতিক ও সাংষ্কৃতিক জগতে এ ভূমিকার স্বীকৃতিস্বরূপ বিভিন্ন পদকে ভূষিত হয়েছেন তিনি। ২০১৩ সালে বাংলা একাডেমি তাঁকে ফেলোশিপ দিয়ে সম্মানিত করেছেন। জীবনের দীর্ঘ সময় তিনি রাজনীতির সাথ সক্রিয়ভাবে জড়িত ছিলেন। বর্তমানে তিনি লেখালেখি ও গবেষণার কাজে নিয়োজিত আছেন।
